Cynthia's Favorite Vegan Things for July

Sometimes you need a little something more to snack on than just cashews and cherries. There are tons of vegan snacks out there--potato chips, pretzels, corn chips--but most are terrible for you. Here are three healthier vegan snacks that I've been digging lately.

1. Snapea Crisps, Lightly Salted by Harvest Snaps

We got a sample of these at the Natural Products Expo this year and I wasn't sure I'd like them, but one bite and I was hooked! They're totally addicting. Both Brad and I (and our dog Monroe ) have to stop ourselves from eating the whole bag in one sitting. These tasty guys are made from green peas and a little rice. And they're baked, not fried so they have a "cheese puff" texture that makes them fun to eat. High levels of protein and vitamin D, non-GMO, low fat and sodium. You can find these at major grocery stores and Amazon. Oh, and some of their other flavors are not vegan, look for "Lightly Salted."

2. Todd's Bourbon Smoked Chipotle Vegan Jerky by Louisville Vegan Jerky Company

Brad has been trying a few of the new vegan jerky brands on the market and he was feeling pretty disappointed until he stumbled across this one a couple of weeks ago. He loves everything about it--the flavor, the texture, the smell. I wasn't a huge fan of jerky to begin with (it's kind of a guy thing, no?) but he insisted I try this, and honestly, he probably shouldn't have, because I've been sneaking into the snack cupboard and enjoying some of his jerky when he's not looking. (Sorry, babe.) It's just so good! There are three other flavors that we've yet to try, (I'll report back, as soon as we do) but you can't go wrong with this one. The chipotle gives it a nice little kick. Louisville Vegan Jerky Company is a new company (and super small, like four people) so you'll probably have to go to their website and use the store locator for a store near you. But they also list where you can order it online.

3. Aged White Cheddar Popcorn (and Puffs) by Earth Balance

As you can see, following a plant-based diet doesn't mean you have to give up all those old staples you used to love, back even five short years ago that wasn't the case, but today it's easy to find replacements for just about anything and everything, including cheddar popcorn and puffs. The popcorn tastes just like the white cheddar you remember, and the Puffs are a great alternative to Pirates Booty. Indulge without the guilt or the dairy! Earthbalance is a popular brand that makes butter, mayo, even boxed mac and cheese (which is delicious) alternatives. I haven't tried the Cheese-it alternatives yet, but they're on the list.

You've probably seen these snacks at your local store, but you can also purchase them online, even Amazon. 100% natural and nonGMO.
